Metadata filters

Before you start to deploy metadata, it's important that you get to know the metadata filter.

Once you've selected the orgs you would like to compare, go ahead and click compare now to start your instant comparison.

Here you'll be faced with a blank canvas where you can cherry pick your changes and deploy them from your source to your target.

Along the left hand side, you'll find all the metadata types supported by the metadata API. You can pick from some ready made filters or create your own by clicking manage custom filters.

By using the search bar, you can look for a specific metadata type.

Standard objects are treated as custom objects, so selecting custom objects will let you compare all standard objects in your orgs.

If there are items you've made changes to, keep in mind other metadata types that may be affected.

For example, profiles, permissions, and layouts, as you'll need to select these two to make sure they appear in your comparison.

Once you choose a metadata type, Gear Set automatically includes all items from your orgs, but you can get specific by clicking specify named items and rules. This lets you pick out exactly what you want to compare, either from the list or by searching by object names or using regular expression.

You can select which API version you'd like to use and refine how to retrieve managed packages.

Once you've picked which types you would like to include in your comparison, you can save this filter for future use and share with your team. If you'd like to learn more about the metadata filters, please click on this link.
